After 8 years of family travel, these are the hacks I wish I'd known sooner.

2. A Magnetic Night Light
Hotel rooms have exactly two settings: pitch black or blindingly bright from the bathroom light. Neither is ideal when you're traveling with little ones who need some light to feel comfortable but you also need to actually sleep.
This small magnetic night light solves this completely. It's easy to move around, doesn't take up outlet space, and provides just enough glow without lighting up the whole room. I keep ours in the kids' go-bag and it comes on every single trip. Hotel rooms feel a lot less unfamiliar to little ones when there's a familiar soft light in the corner.

3. The Pillow Bumper Trick
This one costs nothing and works every time. If you're traveling with a toddler or young child who's used to sleeping in a toddler bed or a bed with rails, a standard hotel king or queen can feel terrifyingly wide. The risk of rolling off in the middle of the night is very real.
The fix: take the spare pillows (hotels always have them) and tuck them lengthwise under the fitted sheet along the edge of the bed. It creates a firm, built-in bumper that won't shift during the night. Free, effective, and you don't need to pack a thing. I've been doing this for years and it works perfectly every time.

4. A Mini Travel Sound Machine
If your child sleeps with a sound machine at home (and so many do), leaving it behind is one of the fastest ways to wreck everyone's sleep on a trip. Hotel hallways are noisy. Housekeeping starts early. Other guests aren't quiet.
This mini sound machine keeps the bedtime routine intact, which matters more than people realize when kids are in an unfamiliar environment. They're actually tiny, fit in a personal item or even a jacket pocket, and the difference they make to how well everyone sleeps is massive.

5. Hanging Activity Bags
These hanging activity bags are not only great for toys, but for packing the kids clothing as well! I hang them in the hotel closet and they become the entire kids' packing system. The detachable pouches are the whole point: socks and undies in one, PJs and books in another, tops and bottoms in the middle two sections, and bulkier items like an extra sweater in the exterior pocket,. Everything is at eye level, nothing ends up on the floor, and the kids can actually find their own stuff without tipping out a whole suitcase. Packing back up at the end of the trip takes about 30 seconds because nothing ever left its pouch.
